Institute presentation

The Klinikum der Universität München (LMU) has a history going back to 1813, and has grown through the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy is a prestigious hospital since the early 20th century known for the work of Emil Kraepelin and Alois Alzheimer. The hospital with 220 inpatients and a large outpatient service (policlinic) is the biggest psychiatric university department in Germany, running a lot of different research laboratories including psychoneuroimmunology, genetics, molecular biology, psychophysiology and neurophysiology. A specialized Tourette inpatients and outpatients service initially for adults, later on also for children/adolescents was founded in the late 1980ies with currently more than 600 patient contacts per year. As a special service it combines diagnostic, clinical and therapeutic care for Tourette patients from south Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with a scientific approach. Scientific collaborations in the field of Tourette syndrome have been established beside others with the Institute for Immunology, Internal Medicine Department (clinical immunology unit and infections unit), Childrens Hospital (von Haunersches Kinderspital), Max-von Pettenkofer-Institute for Microbiology, and the German national reference centre for Streptococci, Aachen. The Tourette special service which is involved in the EMTICS project is a well-known department which has performed a lot of studies on Tourette syndrome, in particular related to the immune system and infections.

The workgroup Neurobiochemistry at the Institute for Laboratory Medicine (formerly the laboratory department for psychoneuroimmunology and therapeutic drug monitoring of the psychiatric hospital) is well experienced in the determination of neurochemical, pharmacological, and immunological parameters from different body fluids. One of the special focuses is the determination of tryptophan metabolism intermediates. The techniques/ equipment available include Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) with tandem mass-spectrometry (MS/MS), which has been established within the EU 7FP consortium project MOODINFLAME.
