The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bari is currently divided into five sections:

• Section of General Pathology, Experimental and Clinical
• Section of Internal Medicine and Clinical Oncology,
• Section of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine
• Section of Human PhysiologySection of Pharmacology

Within the Department operate different research groups working in the field of biomedicine, clinical medicine, oncology, clinical immunology and immunopathology with special attention to statistical and epidemiological aspects of Public Health.

The laboratory of cell cultures and neuronal differentiation in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Human Oncology is concerned with the influence of endogenous and environmental factors on the expression of postmitotic markers during neurontogenesi of nervous tissue.

The main expertises of the laboratory are:

• primary cell cultures of central and peripheral neurons and their differentiation in vitro;
• cell cultures of immortalized lines and their differentiation in vitro;
• morphological analysis of neuronal differentiation and synaptic stabilization;
• analysis of gene expression in cells and tissues: RT-PCR, ELISA, immunofluorescence, western blotting;
• study of cell death and apoptosis;
• identification of antibodies in sera of patients with autoimmune diseases and cellular localization of their targets
