Institute presentation

The University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden covers the entire spectrum of modern medicine and combines 26 clinics, four institutes and three interdisciplinary centers which work closely with the institutes of the faculty of medicine.

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

In a rapidly changing society like ours, more and more children suffer from behavioral disorders or emotional problems. These include major difficulties within family life, at kindergarten/school, problems with peers, continuous grief and sadness, anxieties, changes in eating habits, sleep or social behavior (e.g. aggressiveness).

In our team physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, educators, occupational therapists and physical therapists work closely together. This cooperation provides the opportunity for a precise and comprehensive diagnosis and an individual treatment plan developed to meet the requirements of each child.

The following disorders are diagnosed and treated:

• Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
• Tic disorders/ Tourette syndrome
• Eating disorder (Anorexia and Bulimia)
• Anxiety disorder
• Mood/ affective disorders (e.g. depression)
• Posttraumatic stress disorders
• Other emotional and behavioral disorders of childhood and adolescence (e.g. enuresis)

Research

Besides the clinical care the department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy has a large research department. The research priorities correlate with the emphasis of treatment:

1. Tic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder with projects about sensory phenomena and inhibition deficits in these patient groups,
2. Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with projects focusing on sensory memory, inhibition deficits, atopic eczema and the motor skills of children with ADHD,
3. Eating disorder with projects investigating the neurobiological factors involved in anorexia nervosa.

Within these projects, we employ research methods like neurophysiology (EEG and TMS), structural and functional imaging (MRI, fMRI) and computerised testing.
The close cooperation with many researchers in Dresden as well as national and international collaborations offers us a productive scientific and personal exchange.
